The confusion comes from the fact that with finger vibrato on a fretted guitar, you can only go up. Same goes for most vibrato arm systems.

It's the same for any guitar - the note in the center of the oscillation is what the listener hears. If you go up and back the note will sound sharp.

I thought vibrato was only a shift in pitch going up and back to the original note, rather than up and down with the target note in the center of the pitches, is it different for slide guitar, or do I have my facts wrong?
