A clip from the beautiful documentary on Andy Goldsworthy, "Rivers and Tides". If you enjoy this clip, please support his work by purchasing the dvd. In this clip he builds a sculpture out of driftwood and watches as the tide takes it out to sea. This is a good example of his wonderful work with time.

Couldn't the same argument be used for clay sculpture? It's not a pot, mother nature made the dirt, the artist just re-arranged it. Oh, Michaelangelo wasn't an artist, mother nature made the marble, he just chopped it up. Oh, landscape artists? They're just rearranging pigments to represent something they didn't even come up with, mother nature created it. Oh, actors? They're not artists, they're just portraying events.

In the full version of the film, there's a lot of credit for the film artist. He is actually quite well-known as a film artist and has definitely gotten the credit he deserves. As for Andrew Goldsworty, have you ever tried to do something like this? There's a heck of a lot of difficult work that goes into this 'simple re-arranging'. The art is that he thought of re-arranging it and took the hours upon hours to do so.

I was in an Art Appreciation class. I am trying to learn how to appreciate this in all of its aspects. It's certainly different.

The true art in this is the filming and the music dubbed into it. Where's the credit for that? Oh, mother nature created it, he just re-arranged it.
