I think the two versions of this song are both very good in their own right, Cash's takes on a different meaning when he sings the song, but Trent's rendition (the original, obviously) carries with it it's own emotions and such.

Both are good in their own way. And for their own reasons.
I mean, hey - this song has obviously emerged from the saddest recesses of Trent's soul and remains deeply emotional with every performance. But even stated, now that Johnny Cash made it his musical epitaph, the song does not belong to him any longer. It simply fits that man's life.

Cash sings this better than Reznor? Yeah, sure. When Trent sings it, I can feel absolute regret and pain. When Cash sang it I just felt sorry for the guy. Cash is remarkable, but he takes a distant second to Trent on this song.
