He isn't German. This time we're not to blame. :) BTW: He wrote "Reformation Germany". He talking about the Protestant Reformation of Martin Luther in 1517. At this time Germany was the "Holy Roman Empire of German Nation". But this weren't good times. Constantly wars and battles between the Germans states, which led to the Thirty Years' War (30% of the population died). Probably he's very religious. He wrote against the Pope and Jesuits.
