Well, in his defense Rachel never actually told Ross that she loved him, and that was what he was referring to. She pretty much did the opposite, pretending to be okay with everything.

Actually, its probably vice versa, in that you can hear elements of his (real) British accent in his (fake) American one. This is long before he was doing the American accent regularly, and he still says today that he has to concentrate really hard on the American accent, so I doubt that it was slipping in 10 years ago.
