This is what people are saying about this video . . .
From idolise.: April 2007:
http://hiidol.blogspot.com/200... "Since examinations are the favour of the month, I will also take this opportunity to introduce the work of Tom Lehrer and RonfarZ3:
RonfarZ3 covers Tom Lehrer's comic song New Math (1965)
For your information, Thomas Andrew (Tom) Lehrer (born April 9, 1928) is an American singer-songwriter, satirist, pianist, and mathematician. He used to lecture on mathematics and musical theater. As for RonfarZ3, he is "the guy who gets all the jokes" (according to him)."
From Captain's Quarters:
http://www.captainsquartersblo... "I don't think process matters more than results; I think both are important, but in order to truly see conservatism ascendant, we have to produce positive results with the process. Otherwise, we have New Math, which as Tom Lehrer delightfully skewers in his song of the same name, getting the right answer matters less than understanding the process. Here's the Professor at his mathematical best, animated and lip-synched brilliantly by RonfarZ3 and Benjamin M W at"
From ICT 4 Champions:
http://ict4champions.blogspot.... For instance, the video snippet, New Math, by Tom Lehrer (performed by Ronfar z3) explains that New Math is all about understanding what you doing rather than getting the right answer . . .
From Maths literacy Teachers Blog:
http://mathslit.blogspot.com/2... I have been looking at Youtube for teaching and learning and found some really cool videos . . . I really enjoyed this one by Tom Lehrer performed by Ronfar z3

Maybe because they don't actually cover bases different from base-10 in high school, that's university stuff, at least here. Don't feel bad.

Maths is an unclean force, it should be banned immediately. The devil sleeps in Sylow's theorem.
Myella229 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
the sad thing is that this was actually the way I was taught, until I went to a dif school district and was 2 grades behind all the other students. I'm 24 now and to this day I still have problems with adding and subtracting.
CountChagny (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
"7 from 3" = 3-7
"8 from 4" = 4-8
If you carry the 1 to either 3 or 4, you get "13-7" or "14-8", both of which = 6. Makes sense.
jwm239 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
...base 8 uses only the eight digits 0 thru
7 (contrasts with our base ten system which uses 0 thru 9). Hence, in base 8, the first counting numbers are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12,
13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, ... etc. This
is also known as the 'octal' system, the
'oct-' prefix meaning 'eight.' |
