Overcome Glossophobia (Fear of Public Speaking)

This video, released in 1949, was originally titled "Stage Fright and What to Do About It." I gave it a more modern name because public speaking is required more today than ever. Many people suffer from moderate anxiety to full blown panic attacks when called upon to speak before an audience. The advice given is this video is as useful today as it was in 1949. After all, fear is a basic human emotion and the techniques for keeping fear at a healthy level need not be complicated. The medical term for the fear of public speaking is glossophobia. [From Wikipedia: Glossophobia or speech anxiety is the fear of public speaking. The word glossophobia comes from the Greek glossa, meaning tongue, and phobos, fear or dread. It is believed to be the single most common phobia — affecting as much as 75% of the population. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G... ] This video gives good, common sense advice on how to cope with the fear of public speaking. There is no greater reward for someone who uploads videos than to know that you have helped somebody. Good luck with your speech and Happy Holidays. -Michael

To anyone checking out this vid because of 'stage fright', if it's really bad as it is with me I recommend natural Gelsemuim. However, it may also help to consider beta-blockers that are specifically used on an 'as needed' basis by musicians, lawyers, speakers and presenters. For some people it can make the world of difference. Just talk to a doc and it might really help, along with taking the advice of videos like this.

It is definitely a real phobia. Those who suffer from it suffer very real symptoms. They might have trouble breathing or even feel as though they are having a break from reality. It can be very intense. Thanks for commenting.

Thank you. This is a real phobia for some (like fear of spiders, flying, etc). I have tried explaining this to people before, that I'm not just a little worried about doing a great job, but that I get panic attacks. This film sums up the begining stages so well (invading your waking and sleeping thoughts), and to think it's from the 40s! Thanks.

It is a very real phobia suffered by millions of people. Hope it helped.

Wow, thanks this really helped, i never realized those points, i just thought it was something of not knowing your subject, not self respect.

Well, that's one approach. Of course, remaining conscious is important too.

If I was Fred I'd take 3x10mg of valium washed down by a large scotch one hour before the speech!
