In old Christianity a monkey without a tail was a much used image for the devil. It resembled the human appearance too much, which in some way was frightening. Besides, they could be seen as proof for Darwin's theory of evolution, and indirect as proof against God's creation of earth and its species. Then comes King Louie, a tailless monkey singing "woopidoo, I wanna be like you". Simply amazing! What a great character. No wonder most people find him to be a shady character!
