Hmm. actually, the character was pulling away from her as he was trying to control himself and he knew he had trouble doing that. This is proved when, much later in the film, he visits Lorelei backstage to end the relationship and she asks for one last kiss. he acquiesces... and he doesn't dump her!! Watch the film again and try to understand why the characters behave the way they do.

Maybe she doesn't appeal to heteros as much now (cos she's dead!) but in her day her main fanbase was men. Marilyn said: "My popularity seemed to be almost an entirely masculine phenomenon" It was women who weren't that keen (jealousy?) As time has passed and Marilyn has come to be seen as a 'sister in suffering' as one feminist put it and was generally treated unfairly by men, it is women and gay men who seem to recognize her pain so her fan base changed. But it wasn't always like that.
